Our Greece and Italy trip is only 3 1/2 weeks away – but who’s counting, right? 😉
I’m getting so excited about this family vaca, and have been avidly reading up on Greece and Italy. I know there are economic issues in both countries right now, but I also know that they need our tourism more than ever. In fact, the Greek people recently pooled their money together to support an ad campaign that specifically targeted Americans and encouraged them to visit their country. I, for one, plan to do my part.
So in the coming weeks I plan to sharpen my blogging skills, in preparation for the big trip, by featuring some of the places we’ll be visiting.
First up, Hydra (pronounced Eee-drah – yes mom, this one’s for you). This will actually be the second destination we visit after Athens. After learning more about this picturesque island off the coast of mainland Greece, I’ve come to the conclusion that if there’s anywhere I’m liable to abandon ship and become an ex-pat, Hydra may be it. Like many Greek isles, it’s a favorite tourist stop. But, what sets Hydra apart is that you won’t find one motorized vehicle on the island. The isle is limited to foot traffic (and of course the occasional mule for heavy-lifting) only. With a quaint harbor, homey tavernas, hiking and secluded beaches, we’ll have plenty to do during our stay. Check out this New York Times article on Hydra.
I look forward to leaving the hustle and bustle behind me and relaxing on the island…and if there just happens to be a ferry strike while we’re in Hydra, I’ll thank my lucky stars.
