Getting twisty with it!

The one thing I obsess about before any big event or trip is falling when I run.  I know it sounds odd, but this worry is not unwarranted as I’ve made a habit out of falling while running (and sometimes not running at all!)  A skinned knee or twisted ankle could be a major inconvenience when sightseeing on vacation.  I don’t really think of myself as clumsy, but alas…the facts are the facts.  I’m a faller – and my knees have the scars to prove it.

Which is why it should come as no surprise that yesterday during my bootcamp exercise class the inevitable occurred…I fell.  And with that fall I twisted my ankle.  I guess there is something to self-fulfilling prophecies. 🙂

The good news is that the sprain is not bad at all – and I should be back in working order for Thursday’s bootcamp.  It does remind me to slow down a bit though…a sprained ankle will not be much help while exploring the Plaka in Athens or hiking on the island of Hydra.

The twist did get me thinking though of another twisty destination we’ll be visiting this May – the Amalfi Coast in Italy.  This region of Italy’s coast, south of Naples,  is widely considered to be the most scenic in the country.  We visited the area in 2006 and fell in love.  This time, we’ll make Positano our home base, but we plan to visit many of the other towns along the coast.

Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy

The twisty part is the drive – the roads along the Amalfi Coast are twisting, turning, narrow thrill rides.  The challenging drive comes with big rewards as the views are breathtaking – with lovely Italian cliff-hugging towns nestled over the Mediterranean Sea.  Our plan is to take the bus from Sorrento down to Positano and then possibly hire a car/driver another day to take in the rest of the coast.  However, this combination might prove too much temptation for my Dad.  I have a feeling we may end up renting a car to testdrive the winding roads ourselves.

Either way, I’m sure we’re in for a very exciting trip.

  1. Love your blog. What a creative daughter I have. Your writing is perfect for this medium: interesting, humorous, insightful and entertaining. Our friends and fam are going to love your travel journal and I can just sit back, relax, sip something cool to drink and know our trip is being well documented with pizazz!. What more could a mom ask for these days. OF course, nothing. I would go ahead and send this out to everyone on your list. They will love it. Love you. Mom
