My Big Fat Greek and Italian Vacation

That title has a nice ring to it, right?  Thanks to Anna for the inspiration (and reminder about that incredibly funny movie with the similar name).  In one day and a wake-up, we’ll be off to the lands of endless souvlaki and pizza (can you tell it’s getting close to lunch).  So before I leave, I thought it might be nice to share a quick recap of all the places we’ll be visiting.  Here goes…

  • Athens – we’ll land here on Friday morning and spend two days exploring one of the world’s most ancient cities.

  • The Island of Hydra – Next we’ll take a ferry to Hydra and spend two days here exploring the island.  See my past blog on this haven with no motorized vehicles, boasting one of the most picturesque harbors of any island in Greece.
  • Nafplion – After taking a ferry back to the mainland, we’ll rent a car and travel over the Corinth Canal to Greece’s Peloponnese Peninsula.  We’ll stay in Nafplion, the first capital of modern Greece (till 1834), using this as our base to visit the ancient ruins in the area.  We’ll also visit the town’s Palamidi Fortress, built by the Venetians during their occupation in the 1700s.  More than 1,000 steps lead up from the town to the top of the fortress (excercise while on vacation – check!)

  • Rome – After a week in Greece, we’ll catch a flight in Athens and make our way to Italy (gaining an hour too).  We’ll just have one day here to hit a top site or two.  The Pantheon is a must since I still haven’t visited this site in my previous two trips.
  • Positano – Here’s where the relaxation part of our vacation truly begins….ahh, the Amalfi Coast!  We’ll be here almost a full week – and besides driving the twisty roads, we’ll visit the island of Capri, hike to other Amalfi Coast towns, and get our fill of amazing Italian food and wine.

  • Ciao! – We’ll head back to Rome for another night before catching our flight back to the states….hopefully refreshed and with memories to last a lifetime!

  1. What a wonderful trip. Be careful in Corinth. When I was there I fell into an archeological dig. There are lots of them in that part of Greece.

    1. Thanks Diane. We won’t make it to Corinth this time, but we’re being very careful where we step. Hope you’re well!
