On Friday afternoon, we made our way to Brier Island for a whale watching tour. The tour was with Brier Island Whale and Seabird Cruises.

But before heading out, we stumbled upon the Digby farmers market as we strolled along the harbor. It was super cute with lots of local vendors selling everything from honey to ciders and wine to jewelry.

The drive to Brier Island was about 1 1/2 hours and required two car ferry passings as we hopped from Digby neck and over two islands. Both ferries were less than 10 mins.

After checking in for the tour, we noticed an adorable “micro bakery” right by us – you know we had to check it out! The whole operation was housed in a mini boxcar – really neat concept. And, we got to meet THE Sharkey – the inspiration for the bakery’s name.

Back to the tour, we suited up in our super flattering flotation suits (ha) and drove over to the dock to meet our tour guide. We had decided on a zodiac tour because you can usually get a bit closer to the whales, and it’s a smaller group.

We cruised out into the Bay of Fundy, which is renowned for whale watching due to the massive change in tides stirring up huge amounts of nutrients. This attracts a large population of humpback whales who use this area as their summer feeding grounds.

The pics don’t do the tour justice… it was magical! We saw several small groups of humpbacks and were within 15 feet of them sometimes. Watching these huge creatures in their natural habitat – gracefully skimming the surface and then diving deep to feed – never gets old. I hadn’t been on a whale watching tour in a while – and this was the first one for JR and the girls – and we all loved every minute. Before we headed back in, we even saw a momma humpback with her calf, and they swam directly under our boat. 😍

We ended our day with a yummy dinner at the inn on Brier Island and a stroll to the lighthouse, before driving back to Digby.
