Our last day in the Digby area and the weather cooperated with sunny skies!

Today we visited the Port Royal historic settlement (circa 1605), located right outside Annapolis Royal. This was the first successful attempt by Europeans to establish a permanent settlement in Canada. The settlement had been painstakingly recreated using the original 17th-century architectural designs. Funny enough, the campaign to reconstruct the settlement was spearheaded by a woman from Boston. The site is now managed by Parks Canada. 

We enjoyed walking through the settlement and imagining what life might’ve been like many centuries ago.

After that blast to the past, we made our way to Annapolis Royal for afternoon tea. This is a tradition that my mom, sister, and I have been doing for many years. I love sharing this tradition with the girls now. 

The next morning, we had a bright and early start as we made our way to Prince Edward Island (PEI). The drive overall was about five hours in the car so I’d strategically broken it up into two parts – each about 2 1/2 hours. The halfway point was Burntcoat Head Park, where tidal changes are over 50 feet each day. These are the highest tides in the world!

When we arrived, it was quite a blustery day and we really didn’t want to get out of the van. But I’m sure glad we did because it was a truly unique experience walking on the ocean floor at low tide.

The ground was very slippery though, and both girls took a little tumble. Tears didn’t last long as we started discovering all the unique sea life in the tidal pools.

If only we’d been able to stay to watch high tide, I’m sure it would’ve been really cool to see the ocean come rolling back in. But alas, we had to keep moving…

We drove the rest of the way through Nova Scotia and a small stretch in New Brunswick before crossing the Confederation Bridge (8 miles long) into PEI.

Even though it was a long day, we were renewed by finally reaching our destination. We checked into our AirBnB and then made our way to downtown Charlottetown for a pizza dinner at the Pink Crow.
